In Silver City, view the Western New Mexico University Museum’s collection of Mimbres pottery and the Silver City Museum’s array of frontier artifacts. You’ll find quite a few art galleries in the historic downtown area, as well as numerous restaurants.
Discover how prehistoric cultures survived at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, located in the Gila Wilderness, the first wilderness area designated by Congress. The 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing and hot springs.
Marvel at the Catwalk and Catwalk National Recreation Trail, which were developed in the 1930s when the Civilian Conservation Corps was assigned the task of rebuilding the Catwalk as a recreation attraction for the Gila National Forest. Whitewater Canyon, the site of the Catwalk and Catwalk National Recreation Trail, was a central point in the area’s mining saga and supplied the water needed to generate electricity for the mining town and the mining operations. The Catwalk was built along the water pipeline so that workers who walked the line could make needed and constant repairs. Today it’s a beautiful one mile walk along the steep rock walls of Whitewater Canyon, with a pleasant picnic area along Whitewater Creek.
