The community of Navajo Dam is located in the northwestern area of New Mexico. It is considered to be a resort/retirement area on the San Juan River.

The earthen Navajo Dam was completed in 1962, and now releases a steady flow of cold tail water, which suits Brown and Rainbow fish. The first four miles downstream of the dam are known as the Quality Waters and 70,000 trout, averaging 16 inches, live in that stretch; thousands more inhabit the next 12 miles downstream until the river meets the Animas and La Plata rivers in the city of Farmington.

The community is also a jumping off area for the hunting of deer, elk, geese, duck and coyote. A coyote fur auction is held once a year, which brings in buyers and visitors from around the world.

Navajo Lake is also a recreational area with 150 miles of shoreline. Two full-service marinas are available, offering boat slips, fishing and boating supplies, house boats and ski rentals. Boating and water skiing are popular here and the lake provides good fishing for trout, kokanee salmon, bass, northern pike, catfish, crappie and other warm water species.

The scenic sandstone bluffs of the San Juan River basin create a lasting beauty and a quite solitude for a restful vacation.

Navajo Dam is 20 miles northeast of the city of Bloomfield and 20 miles east of the city of Aztec, at the intersection of County Road 173 and County Road 511. Population of the Dam area is 240+/- during the summer.
