Wine has been produced in New Mexico since the early 1600s. The first grapevines were planted by Franciscan and Capuchin monks in 1629 at Senecu, a Piro Indian Peublo in the center of the state. By the late 1800s, New Mexico was the fifth largest state in wine production in the country.

Flooding of the Rio Grande caused a hiatus in New Mexico wine making for more than fifty years. In 1978, wineries reappeared and today there are more than forty wineries and tasting rooms throughout the state.
