Bernalillo has been a historical site for more then a thousand years, with the Indians inhabiting the area since about 1300. Tiquex Pueblo (Coronado Monument) has sat along the Rio Grande River for generations. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado came through in 1540 looking for the Seven Cities of Gold. The Town of Bernalillo was settled in 1648 by 30 colonial families and was built up into a town from a string of haciendas along the river.

Bernalillo is at the foot of the Sandia (Watermelon) Mountains, beside New Mexico’s major river, the Rio Grande. The main street, Camino Del Pueblo, is also Route 66 (pre 1937), part of the El Camino Real (Kings Highway/Royal Road) which was the trade trail from Mexico and in pre-history from South America. In the 1800s Bernalillo was a wild and rowdy town and in Prohibition era several “bars” were in local homes.

Bernalillo is situated at Highway 25 Exit 242 and is the ideal location between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It is not far to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival Park. US550 will take you to Chamio, Chaco, the Jemez Trail and Farmington.

Bernalillo has seven nearby Pueblos which have several feast days throughout the year. In addition there are three Indian Casinos within a ten-mile radius. There are several wonderful antique stores and emporiums, a great restaurant and several artist galleries.

In August the local fiesta begins for two days and this is when Dance Performers of Los Matachines progress through the town. This dance dates to the 1600s. It is fitting that in September Bernalillo has a wine festival, as the wine grape was introduced here in the 1620s. The Festival is a great place to try New Mexico wine when the wineries show off their libations.

In October is the Bernalillo Arts Walk in which artists around town open their galleries and several businesses host young artists from the local high school as well as other artists.

Bernalillo is truly a unique and historical town.
